As academic coordinator of the European Union in International Affairs (EUIA) conference that took place in Brussels this May, Lisanne Groen introduced Young Researchers’ Masterclasses into the fifth edition of the biennial conference. The masterclasses, deemed successful, saw senior scholars give pointed feedback on both papers and presentations of younger scholars, and enabled them to establish connections with both senior scholars and fellow presenters. In future, running the masterclasses before the conference, as a separate event, might enable postgraduates to get even more out of the conference as a whole.

The aim of the EUIA 2016 masterclasses was to provide PhD and early postdoc researchers with feedback on both their papers and presentation (skills) from senior scholars in a friendly environment. Three masterclasses were included in the conference programme: on economic governance and the environment; migration; and foreign and security policy.

Each masterclass included three to four paper presentations and feedback from a senior scholar with expertise in the issue area. The masterclasses took place simultaneously on the first day of the conference in the morning. The participating junior researchers were allowed to attend the rest of the conference, but not present in a non-masterclass panel, so as to allow a larger number of academics to take part in the conference.

The masterclasses were perceived as a success for several reasons. First, they provided an opportunity for postgraduates to interact with fellow young researchers working in the same issue area and facing similar problems at the early stages of their academic careers. This allowed them to share experiences and to stay in touch during and after the conference, and to continue to share best practice and broaden their networks.

Second, the postgraduates received detailed feedback from senior scholars who are experts in their field. They also had the opportunity to speak with their reviewer after the session and to stay in touch after the conference (in order to receive more feedback with a view to preparing their conference paper for publication).

It was essential to the success of the masterclasses that the senior scholars had taken the time to prepare substantive feedback and were relatively familiar with the topics, so that the early career researchers would receive useful comments on their work. As a paper giver in a normal academic conference panel, by contrast, you can never be sure that your discussant has actually taken the time to read your work and prepare detailed feedback.

Third, the senior scholars commented on issues that are particularly relevant for early-career researchers, such as how to present your conference paper in a convincing manner. In one of the masterclasses, for example, the senior scholar advised the presenters to always face the audience while speaking, to put down only the key points of the paper on the slides and to practice the presentation at home beforehand to make sure it stays within the allowed time limit. The senior scholars were also prepared to answer any early academic career-related questions based on their own experience.

To improve the integration of postgraduates into a future edition of the conference, we might consider organising the masterclasses before the conference, as a separate event – for instance, on the day before (following the example of EISA). This would create space for the junior participants and senior scholars from all the masterclasses to interact with each other before the conference – for example, at a common reception or dinner.

If the masterclasses are billed as a separate event, the junior scholars will be able to take part both in a masterclass and in the normal conference as paper givers and can interact with more scholars. In that way, they get the best of both worlds.

A Minority Safepack nevű kisebbségvédelmi keretegyezményt az RMDSZ kezdeményezésére az Európai Kisebbségek Föderatív Uniója dolgozta ki, ezt az Európai Bizottság elutasította 2013-ban. A FUEN 2014-ben fordult az unió törvényszékéhez az elutasítás miatt, a joghatóság pénteken tárgyalta az ügyet. Vincze Lóránt, az Európai Kisebbségek Föderatív Uniójának elnöke optimistán nyilatkozott a tárgyalás kimeneteléről. Elmondta, hogy a törvényszék kifogásolta azt, hogy a javaslatcsomagot hiányos indoklással vetette el a bizottság, és azt is nehezményezte, hogy az Európai Bizottság által elfogadhatónak ítélt javaslatokat nem iktatták.

„Azt gondolom, óriási előrelépés volna az erdélyi magyarságnak kezdeményezőként, de az egész európai őshonos kisebbségi közösségnek, hogy az Európai Unió egyik intézménye figyelembe veszi ezt a javaslatcsomagot, és én bízom abban, hogy végső soron elkezdődhet egy olyan keretszabályozás kidolgozása, amely jobbá teszi az őshonos nemzeti kisebbségek életét, rájuk helyezi a figyelmet, javítja a sokszínűséget és a soknyelvűséget az Európai Unióban.”

Vincze Lórántot hallották. A Minority Safepack többek között nyelvi, oktatási, kulturális kérdésekben és a regionális politika területén javasol intézkedéseket az Európai Uniónak. Az európai törvényszék várhatóan 2-5 hónapon belül dönt ez ügyben.

A román csapat egy tagjának sikerült érmet szereznie, a kolozsvári Alex Bologa látássérült cselgáncsozó bronzérmet nyert a paralimpia első versenynapján. A paralimpia éremtáblázatán Kína az első, a kínai csapat 239 érmet szerzett a riói játékokon. A második Nagy-Britannia, a harmadik Ukrajna. A magyar paralimpiai csapat 18 éremmel tért haza, ezzel a 47. helyen végzett Magyarország.

Ezek közül egy felrobbant, miközben hatástalanítani próbálták, de nem sérült meg senki. Egy futóversenyen is felrobbant egy bomba New Jerseyben, ott sem sérült meg senki. Minnesota állam egyik városában késes támadás volt szombat este, legalább nyolc személyt sebesített meg a merénylő, akit a rendőrség lőtt le. Ez utóbbi merényletet az Iszlám Állam vállalta magára.

Potápi Árpád János magyar nemzetpolitikai államtitkár szerint a szeptember 17-i határidőig 274 ezren regisztráltak, míg az előző – az országgyűlési – voksoláson ez a szám mintegy 194 ezer volt. A levélcsomagok beérkezési határideje október 1.

The latest round of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan threatens to add the 19th South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Summit, scheduled to be held in Islamabad, Pakistan, in November 2016, to the long list of failed attempts at cooperation in South Asia.

But there are enough signals suggesting that reasons apart from the historical animosity between the two nations are now pulling SAARC apart.

The Raging Fire

The Association, often accused as a stillborn by its various critics because of the lack of appreciable progress towards stitching together a South Asian Union (à la European Union) by means of trade, diplomacy, and infrastructure, has always been an unfortunate recipient of the tensions between its largest two member nations.

The current round of hostility between the two nuclear-armed neighbours began with the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) terrorist Burhan Wani by the Indian army in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K).

The 21-year-old militant was a ‘self-proclaimed commander’ of HM, designated as a terrorist organisation by India, the European Union, and the U.S. He was the poster boy for anti-India people and groups in the Kashmir valley of J&K, and openly defied and challenged the Indian state for war, via social media.

Wani’s killing led to widespread protests in the Indian Kashmir. Adding to the temperature was Pakistan’s open and steadfast support to the slain terrorist. Prime Minister of Pakistan Mr. Nawaz Sharif “expressed shock” at the killing of Wani, and called him ‘martyr’ and a ‘Kashmiri leader’. Pakistan even observed a ‘black day’ on July 19 in solidarity with the victims of violence in Kashmir.

India, predictably, responded quickly and sharply, asking Pakistan to stop “glorifying terrorists”, saying that it makes it abundantly clear where Pakistan’s sympathies lie.

But neither Pakistan’s official support nor the angry protests in India’s Kashmir valley saw any abating even after a month of Wani’s killing. For weeks, the belligerent crowd made up of angry local youth pelted stones at Indian security forces. In response, the men in uniform used pellet guns, causing over 50 deaths and countless injuries among the protestors.

At the same time more than 3,300 security personnel were injured, many seriously, in about 1000 incidents of violence. A few of them later succumbed to the injuries.

As a result, the entire Indian Kashmir valley region was put under curfew for over 50 days in the July-August period. After lifting it for a couple of days, curfew was re-imposed on many parts at the time of writing this report because of further violence.

India continuously accused Pakistan of fanning the trouble by sending financial, logistical, political, and armed support to the protesting crowds.

With Pakistan going all out to support the violent protestors, India, for the first time ever in its history, chose to officially respond in kind to Pakistan’s long-running commentary on the issue of self-right of Kashmiri people in India.

Addressing the nation on its Independence Day on August 15, India’s Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi mentioned the support and good wishes of people of Pakistan’s largest province Balochistan and Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) areas of Kashmir. Balochistan, it may be noted, is home to many political and extremist groups that is demanding independence from Pakistan.

Pakistan was quick to call Mr. Modi’s speech as the vindication of its charges of an Indian hand in the violence in the restive province of Balochistan.

Both India and Pakistan have since upped the ante.

The Indian government approved a proposal to air programs in Balochi and Sindhi (the primary language of Pakistan’s second biggest province, Sindh, where, again, some groups demand an independent Sindhu Desh) via its official radio service.

Taking the clue, the Indian media is currently flush with news about and views from Balochi rebels sitting in the UK and elsewhere. Talks of political asylum to leaders fighting the ‘Balochistan Independence’ battle with Pakistan—in line with that to the Tibetan spiritual guru HH Dalai Lama—are heard with increased frequency in news outlets.

Beyond the talk, the Indian government also approved Rs. 2,000 Crore ($ 300 million) package for displaced people of Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan and PoK regions living in the country. 36,348 such families have been identified for distribution of the package.

To counter India’s communication blitzkrieg, Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on August 27 nominated 22 parliamentarians as special envoys who will ‘highlight the Indian brutalities and human rights abuses in the occupied Kashmir’ in key parts of the world.

And there stands currently the ‘peacetime scenario’ in South Asia.

Can it change in the next 60 days for a fruitful SAARC summit in Islamabad? Well, 69 years of history doesn’t suggest it.

Note: This piece was written prior to a deadly terror attack on an Indian military facility on September 18, which killed 17 Indian army personnel. All the four killed terrorists belonged to the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad terror group.

Helytelen táplálkozás
Aki egészségtelenül eszik, az biztos lehet benne, hogy gyorsabban fog öregedni annál, mint ami a DNS-ébe van kódolva. Kevesebb kalória, több tápanyag, minél több, lehetőleg friss zöldség és gyümölcs, kevés cukor, mértékletes zsírfogyasztás és lassan felszívódó szénhidrátok: ezeket érdemes beépíteni az étrendünkbe, ha szeretnénk sokáig fittek maradni.

Kevés alvás
Ha nem alszunk eleget, vagy elég pihentetően, az megbosszulja magát: nem csak a bőrünk fog öregebbnek látszani tőle, de az agyműködésünk és a fizikai teljesítőképességünk, sőt, az egészségügyi állapotunk is gyengül. Aki nem alszik eleget, annak nagyobb az esélye az elhízásra, a szív- és érrendszeri betegségekre, valamint a rákos megbetegedésekre is.

Stressz
Alkalmanként egy kis stressz még jót is tehet, de akinek az életében állandóan jelen van, az biztos lehet benne, hogy nem csak fizikailag gyengül le, de lelkileg is öregebbnek fogja érezni magát, és sokkal könnyebben lesz depressziós is. Egy bizonyos kor fölött érdemes megkeresni, mi az az aktivitás, sport, hobbi vagy meditációs technika, amivel le tudjuk vezetni a feszültséget.

Lustaság
Számtalan kutatás bebizonyította, hogy a sok ülés mennyire káros az egészségre, így főleg 35-40 éves kor fölött érdemes időt szánni a rendszeres sportolásra. Már csak azért is, mert a folyamatos üldögélés gyengíti, leépíti a vázizomzatot a test alsó részében. A minimum, amit mindenképpen tegyünk meg, hogy óránként legalább 5 percre felállunk, és járkálunk egy keveset.

Rizikófaktorok figyelmen kívül hagyása
Ha valakinek magas a vérnyomása, vagy a vércukra, esetleg a koleszterinje, és ez nem derül ki, vagy esetleg tud róla, de nem tesz ellene semmit, az hatalmas kockázatot vállal: például a stroke-ét vagy a szívbetegségét. Semmi nem öregít meg annyira, mint egy súlyos betegség, így 40 éves kor fölött járjunk rendszeresen szűrővizsgálatokra.
