The EU has issued a statement in which it welcomes the release of a number of political prisoners in Niger, but regrets the detention of Mohamed Bazoum and other key figures, as well as civil society representatives.

The Council adopted the second assistance measure worth €15 million under the EPF that will benefit the Albanian Armed Forces.

The Council adopted first assistance measure worth €10 million under the EPF to strengthen the operational readiness of the Djiboutian Navy.

European Council President António Costa held a joint press conference with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, following the EU-China summit held in Beijing on 24 July 2025. In his remarks, President Costa underlined the importance of the EU-China relationship.

The EU issued a statement on Syria strongly condemning the violence that resulted in hundreds of victims last week in the Southern part of the country, and calling for investigation and accountability.

European Council President António Costa took part in to the 30th EU–Japan summit 2025. In his press statement following the plenary session, he emphasised the importance of strengthening EU-Japan relations, in particular in security and defence, multilateralism, and in trade and economic security.

The President of the European Council, António Costa, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, representing the EU, met Japanese Prime Minister, Shigeru Ishiba at the 30th EU-Japan summit in Tokyo, Japan. The summit provided an opportunity to show the closeness of the EU-Japan partnership, ever more important in the current turbulent geopolitical context.
