Az egész ütközet, melyet később szokás szerint a legközelebbi szárazföldről, a nagyjából 100 mérföldre északkeletre fekvő Matapan-fokról neveztek el, igazából lezajlott nagyjából négy és fél perc alatt. Ennyi idő elég volt ahhoz, hogy az elsöprő túlerőben levő angol hajók rommá lőjék a két olasz nehézcirkálót és az egyik rombolót, majd visszavonuljanak, saját rombolóikra bízva a kegyelemdöfés megadását.

Az olasz hajókat a támadás teljes meglepetésként érte, és arra még csak reagálni sem tudtak. A Zara egyik túlélője szerint a cirkáló parancsnoki hídján észrevették a Pola másodjára fellőtt rakétáit, de sem a cirkálót, sem a már mellettük levő angol csatahajókat nem látták. Amikor a fényszórók megvilágították őket, azt hitték, a Pola kapcsolta fel a saját fényszóróit. A Zara parancsnoka, Luigi Corsi kapitány dühösen meg is jegyezte: „Miért használják a fényszórókat? Mindenki megőrült a Pola fedélzetén?” Amikor az első lövések eldördültek, még akkor is azt hitték, a Pola lő rájuk, mert angol hajókkal tévesztette össze őket. Corsi ezt mondta az első sortűz után: „Most már tüzelnek is ránk! Azonnal adják le az azonosító jelzést!” Az olaszok csak a második sortűz után kaptak észbe, és jöttek rá, hogy nem cirkálólövegekből tüzelnek rájuk. „Ezek 38 centis ágyúk! Csapdába estünk!”

Plusieurs structures de la société civile de l’Ituri se sont exprimées mardi 21 avril 2026, à quelques heures de la première visite du nouveau chef de la Mission onusienne, James Swan, dans la province. Selon elles, la MONUSCO doit renforcer son appui au Gouvernement pour éradiquer les groupes armés, en vue de permettre à plus d’un million de déplacés de regagner leurs villages d’origine.
