(Own report) - The Mejlis, a Crimean Tatar organization - banned in Russia but supported by Berlin - has announced its plans to open official representative offices in Brussels and Washington this autumn, emphasizing particularly the importance of a seat in Brussels. The Mejlis, presented in the West as the only legitimate representative body of the Crimean Tatars, is actually only representing the pro-western tendency among them, while another tendency, with pro-Russian leanings, has for years explicitly rejected its policy. This split among Crimean Tatars hails back to the final years of the Cold War, when the long-time western ally - and subsequently Mejlis Chairman - Mustafa Jemilev supported radical demands for autonomy, while pursuing a tough anti-Russian course. When, in the 1960s, Jemilev began his campaign for Crimean Tatar autonomy in the Soviet-Union, he was given western support aimed at weakening the Soviet adversary from within. At the same time, Crimean Tatars, exiled in the Federal Republic of Germany, were pursuing the same objective - "Russia's national decomposition" - as it was referred to at the time. A Crimean Tatar, who had served as a main liaison to the Nazis, subsequently continuing his collaborationist activities in the Federal Republic of Germany, assisted them and, began in the 1950s, to also work for CIA-financed organizations in Munich.

(BRUXELLES2) Le navire de soutien Frankfurt qui évolue en Méditerranée dans le cadre de l’opération militaire Sophia (EUNAVFOR Med) est intervenu à environ 40 kilomètres au nord de Tripoli (Libye), lundi (16 mai), pour venir en secours d’un canot de migrants en détresse.

115 personnes ont été récupérées, dont 24 femmes. Une personne blessée a été prise en charge par les équipes médiales. Le canot, classé comme un obstacle à la navigation, a été coulé. Les migrants ont ensuite été transférés sur l’Aquarius, le navire des ONG de SOS Méditerranée. Transfert achevé à 19h05 précise la Bundeswehr.

Depuis le début de leur engagement dans la zone, il y a un an, le 7 mai 2015, la marine allemande est venue au secours de 14.065 personnes et a engagé en permanence deux navires dans l’opération européenne en Méditerranée.

On Tuesday, May 17th,  IPI together with the World Peace Foundation cohosted a policy forum event to discuss how lessons from the past can help us better engage current threats of mass atrocities.

The policies that have developed since the 1990s within the “international community” to respond to threats of mass atrocities—defined as widespread and systematic violence against civilians—were primarily crafted in response to the question: What can we do to help prevent, mediate, or halt mass violence? This panel begins from a different perspective, asking instead: How have past episodes of mass violence actually ended? Posing this question in the context of past cases, panelists discussed patterns of who has had the authority and capacity to have an impact on ending mass violence and under what conditions. Bringing the discussion into the present, the panel further addressed how lessons from the past can help us better engage threats of mass atrocities today.
