The next meeting of the Subcommittee on Human Rights will take place on Monday 19 November from 15.00 - 18.30, Tuesday 20 November from 9.00 - 12.30 in meeting room JAN 6Q2, and on Tuesday 20 November from 14.30 in the hemicycle PHS.

Representatives of NGOs as well as other organisations are requested to accede to the EU Transparency Register and follow the procedures therein for access to the European Parliament.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). It is a milestone document which over the decades has inspired a rich body of legally binding international human rights treaties.

The European Parliament has made full use of its powers to contribute to shaping the EU's policies and instruments in advancing human rights both inside and outside the EU. To renew this unshakeable commitment to the subject, the European Parliament will hold a High Level Conference to reflect on the core principles of human rights as set out in the UDHR: universality, inter-dependence and indivisibility, while at the same time addressing new challenges in a global and digital world

The President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani will open the conference in the presence of Vice President/High Representative Federica Mogherini, United Nation High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet, General Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court Fatou Bensouda, Secretary General of the Council of Europe Mr Thorbjørn Jagland, Chair of the African Commission on Human and People's Rights Ms Soyata Maiga, and several other dignitaries.

Ces élections régionales fragilisent encore un peu plus la chancelière. Alliée de la CDU d’Angela Merkel à Berlin, la CSU bavaroise a enregistré un revers historique. Si celle-ci reste la première force politique, elle ne recueille que 37% des voix, loin de son règne quasi sans partage de ces 60 dernières années. Les dirigeants du parti se sont refermés dans une réunion de crise à son siège pendant plus de trois heures pour tirer les conclusions de la débâcle, mais deux choses sont sûres : Horst Seehofer restera ministre et Markus Söder composera un nouveau gouvernement bavarois.

L'Union chrétienne sociale (CSU), alliée bavaroise de la CDU d'Angela Merkel, a subi dimanche son plus grave revers électoral depuis 1950 lors d'élections régionales dont le résultat, favorable à l'extrême droite et aux Verts, pourrait attiser les tensions au sein de la Coalition au pouvoir à Berlin. La CSU a obtenu 35,6% des voix, selon des résultats provisoires. Elle perdrait ainsi sa majorité absolue pour la deuxième fois seulement depuis 1962, ce qui risque de semer la discorde au sein d'un parti qui était déjà un partenaire difficile pour la chancelière. On se souvient de la grave crise gouvernementale en juin dernier entre la chancelière et son ministre de l’Intérieur, le Bavarois Horst Seehofer qui contestait sa politique migratoire. Les Verts, qui doublent leur score, arrivent eux en deuxième position avec 18,3%, suivis d'Alternative pour l'Allemagne (AfD), parti d'extrême droite qui fait son entrée au Parlement régional avec 10,9% des voix. Following the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Kashoggi, the Chair of the EP Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI), Pier Antonio Panzeri, stated:

"A journalist, Jamal Kashoggi is a staunch defender of human rights who in the past constantly denounced human rights violations in Saudi Arabia. He disappeared a week ago after having entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey. Statement in full below.

Élection des présidents des chambres à cinq juges de la Cour de justice

Des lycéens du Grand Paris ont échangé avec des historiens, le 5 octobre. Programme d'histoire unifié dans l'Union européenne, rôle de l'enseignement de l'histoire par rapport au Brexit et aux nationalismes, prise en compte des diversités culturelles, tabou sur les Empires coloniaux européens… Pas simple de (ré)concilier tout le monde.

Selon la Commission européenne, obtenir un accord de principe sur le prochain cadre financier pluriannuel de l'UE pour la période 2021-2027 est possible avant les élections européennes de mai 2019. Néanmoins, les divergences entre les Etats membres paraissent encore très importantes.
