Highlights - Public hearing on climate change and security - Subcommittee on Security and Defence

On 22 November, the Subcommittee will discuss, with the involvement of 3 experts, risks and trends and their security implications for the EU as well as EU efforts to mitigate the security relevant effects of climate change. It will also examine to what extent increased economic/military activities, impact on desertification, land degradation, water and food scarcity can be linked to climate change and what major effects they have on EU security.

Highlights - Workshop “The future of the European Defence Agency” - Subcommittee on Security and Defence

The European Defence Agency (EDA) was created in July 2004 in the context of the drafting of the first European Security Strategy. In recent years, developments have triggered talks on the future of the EDA. In the context of the most recent CSDP innovations (EU Global Strategy, EDF, PESCO, CARD) this workshop will discuss the possible role of the Agency in framing a common Union defence policy and in defining a European capabilities and armaments policy.

Highlights - SEDE Chair offers condolences following the recent terror attacks in Somalia - Subcommittee on Security and Defence

On 16 October, Ana Fotyga, Chair of the SEDE committee, extended her condolences to the people of Somalia following the massive terror attack in Mogadishu. She said:

"This weekend's terror attack in Mogadishu is an unconscionable atrocity. I condemn the perpetrators in strongest terms and would like to extend my sincerest condolences to the people of Somalia. Terrorism is a threat that affects us all and knows no borders. We will continue to do our utmost to support the Somalis and our international partners including the African Union in their fight against this scourge."

Furthermore, the hearing will analyse the military strategic consequences of the conflicts and the possibilities to foster stability and cooperation.

Highlights - UN Treaty on the prohibition of nuclear weapons - Subcommittee on Security and Defence

On 11 October, SEDE will discuss the recently adopted UN Treaty on Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Rooted in serious humanitarian concerns and frustration with slow progress of nuclear disarmament, according to its supporters, the Treaty represents an important milestone in multilateral disarmament efforts, as it sets up a number of norms that build upon the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and contributes to a renewed progress on nuclear arms reduction towards their eventual elimination.
