A Yamato osztály 04.

1940 augusztus nyolcadikai vízrebocsátása után a Yamato építése a gépek és a fegyverzet beszerelésével, valamint a felépítmény építésével folytatódott. A csatahajó 1941 őszén került olyan készültségi szintre, hogy el lehetett kezdeni a próbajáratokat. Az utolsó hónapokban már lehetett tudni, hogy közeleg Japán háborúba való belépése, így a csatahajó építésének ütemét igyekeztek felgyorsítani. A feszített tempó és a kapkodás valószínűleg nem hatott előnyösen sem a hajógyári munkásokra, sem a hajó legénységére, a decemberben megtartott első lőgyakorlatok ugyanis olyan pocsékul sikerültek, hogy Yamamoto személyesen látogatott el a hajóra rendet csinálni, és alaposan kiosztani a tiszteket. A következő teszteket már alaposabban előkészítették, és a csatahajó tüzérsége néhány hetes intenzív tréning után végül hozta az elvárt eredményeket. A hajót 1941 december 16-án egy minden felhajtás nélkül megtartott, mondhatni szigorúan zártkörű ünnepségen hivatalosan is szolgálatba állították, bár a próbajáratok és a lövészetek valójában még hosszú hetekig eltartottak. A Takayanagi Gihachi sorhajókapitány parancsnoksága alatt álló Yamato a Nagato és a Mutsu társaságában, az 1. Csatahajó Osztag kötelékében állt hadrendbe.
