Kamala Harris gave her victory speech on Saturday evening dressed all in white, the colour of the suffragettes. She commemorated the women of all skin colours who fought for freedom and equality. Not all commentators are convinced that Harris can meet the high expectations that being the first woman and black woman in the vice presidency entails.

A partial lockdown will apply in Romania starting today. Among other measures, vegetable markets will be closed. In the wake of fierce criticism from farmers, the government has announced plans to take a differentiated approach to applying the rules in the country's cities and municipalities - entirely to the approval of commentators.

The Turkish Minister of Finance Berat Albayrak, who has been talked of as the successor to his father-in-law Erdoğan for years, announced his resignation on Sunday by Instagram. An official statement of the government is still pending, but unofficially the resignation was confirmed. The decline of the Turkish economy is probably not the only reason for Albayrak's withdrawal, media speculate.

France commemorated those who died in the Nice attack with a moving ceremony on Saturday. Prime Minister Jean Castex once again declared war on radical Islam. The events of recent weeks have also rekindled a debate on French secularism.
