On 11 October 2017, SEDE held a public hearing on the militarisation in the Black Sea. The hearing was timely, as the regional security situation on the eastern flank has become very challenging for the EU and NATO. It focused on the security situation following the Russian illegal annexation of Crimea and the conflict in Eastern Ukraine. Furthermore, the hearing analysed the military strategic consequences of the conflicts and the possibilities to foster stability and cooperation.

Laut einem EVP-Antrag soll eine schnellere EU-Annäherung dreier Länder der Östlichen Partnerschaft erreicht werden: Moldawien, Georgien und die Ukraine haben ohnehin als Ziel ausgegeben, eines Tages EU-Mitglieder zu werden.

The Committee on Foreign Affairs, the Subcommittee on Human Rights and the Committee on Development will hold an exchange of views with last year's laureate of the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. Mr Sentsov is a Ukrainian film director who had been sentenced to 20 years in prison for "plotting terrorist acts" against the Russian "de facto" rule in Crimea. After spending more than five years behind bars, he was released from prison in September this year as part of a major prisoner swap between Russia and Ukraine.

Nach der scharfen Kritik von Frankreichs Präsident an der Nato bemüht sich das Bündnis um Schadensbegrenzung. Bundesaußenminister Heiko Maas stieß am Mittwoch mit einem Vorschlag für eine Expertengruppe zur Reform des Bündnisses auf ein positives Echo.

Während die Zahl der durch Terroranschläge verursachten Todesfälle im Jahr 2018 rückläufig war, lässt sich ein deutlicher Anstieg von Aktivitäten rechtsextremistischer terroristischer Gruppen feststellen.
