Ausschuss für Auswärtige Angelegenheiten (AFET) - Europäisches Parlament

On 30 June from 9.00, BUDG committee held a high-level joint hearing with LIBE, AFET and DEVE committees on the budgetary implications of the refugee and migration crisis. The keynote speech was given by Mr George Soros, founder and Chair of Open Society foundations. Other speakers included the Commission's Directors General for Budget, DEVCO and NEAR, Directors of Frontex and EASO, the UNHCR Europe Director, ECRE Secretary General and Oxfam representative.

MEPs discussed the past andpresent budgetary initiatives, solidarity and cost-sharing between MemberStates and the EU external actions' financing in relation to the crisis.

The Committee on Foreign Affairs will hold an exchange of views with Tibetan Buddhist leader H.H. the Dalai Lama and discuss matters of common interest including situation in Tibet as regards religious, cultural and other traditions. The exchange of views will take place in Strasbourg, on 15 September. The committee will also exchange views with the Prime Minister of Montenegro - Milo Đukanović.
The meeting will be webstreamed live, from 08:00-10:00.

The Committee on Foreign Affairs will vote on two key draft opinions to the Measures to safeguard the security of gas supply (Rapporteur: Jacek Saryusz-Wolski, PPE) and to the Establishing an information exchange mechanism in the field of energy (Rapporteur: Eduard Kukan, PPE). The vote will take place at an extraordinary session in Strasbourg, on 12 September. The discussion with Commissioner Hahn on on the most current developments in the Eastern Partnership countries has also been confirmed.

On Thursday, 1 September the Foreign Affairs and the Development Committees met jointly from 10:00 to 12:30 in preparation of a joint report on external policies responses to the ongoing refugee and migrant movements.
Karen Abu Zayd, Special Adviser on the UN Summit for Refugees and Migrants (New York on 19 September) addressed MEPs. This was followed by discussions with the European Commission's Director General for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, and senior officials of the European External Action Service.
