On Thursday, 8 December, the SEDE committee will welcome Mr Sven Biscop of the Egmont Institute for a discussion on the topic “Implementing the Global Strategy – What impact on transatlantic security and defence relations?” The discussion forms part of the EP’s follow-up to the publication of the Global Strategy Implementation Plan on Security and Defence and the European Defence Action Plan.

On 28 November, the Subcommittee on Security and Defence will hold an exchange of views with Jean-Louis De Brouwer, Director for Europe, Eastern Neighbourhood and Middle East, DG ECHO and Kawa Hassan, Director, Middle East and North Africa Program, EastWest Institute. The exchange of views will provide members of the committee a comprehensive picture of the ongoing Mosul offensive, analysing both its political and military implications as well as its humanitarian consequences.

The EUPOL police mission in Afghanistan is a major and long-standing contribution of the European Union to the rebuilding of the Afghani state. However, its current mandate will expire in December 2016 and discussions are currently ongoing about the possible future modalities of EU engagement to which the hearing on 9 November could make a valuable contribution.
