Elena Valenciano (S&D, ES), Chair of the Subcommittee on Human Rights, calls for the European Union to disburse all the available funds to alleviate the human suffering in Yemen and to assist in particular organisations which assist children. Elena Valenciano urges the international community to respond swiftly to the latest appeal launched by UNICEF.

The next meeting of the Subcommittee will take place on Tuesday 22 September from 9 a.m. - 12.30 p.m. and from 3 p.m. to 18.30 p.m. in meeting room ASP A3G3

Representatives of NGOs as well as other organisations are requested to accede to the EU Transparency Register and follow the procedures therein for access to the European Parliament.

The Members of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament, led by Chair Elmar Brok, joined by their colleagues from the Sub-Committee on Human Rights, led by Richard Howitt, and with participation of Andrej Plenkovic, the Chair of the EP delegation to the EU-Ukraine Parliamentary Association Committee, visited Ukraine on 23 and 24 July.

The services of the European Commission are currently reflecting on the follow-up to the Strategy for equality between women and men 2010-2015 (COM (2010) final). The EU's trade policy has not yet been fully integrated into this Strategy, providing an opportunity for the INTA committee to consider whether and how gender issues should be dealt with in the context of the EU's trade policies. Article 8 TFEU provides that “in all its activities, the Union shall aim to eliminate inequalities, and to promote equality between men and women.” The trade policy issues that are discussed by the European Parliament's INTA committee can have differing gender impacts across the various sectors of the economy. Understanding the gender dimension of trade agreements better will therefore contribute to better policy making and to ensuring that both sexes can take advantage of the benefits of trade liberalisation and be protected from its negative effects.

Human Rights conditionalities in thecontext of regional trade agreements with African countries

Members from the Subcommittee on Human Rights and theCommittee on International Trade will look at Economic Partnership Agreements(EPAs) and their potential to become a catalyst for regional integration,economic and social change in Africa, which could have an impact on humanrights in these countries and regions.
