EU should use trade agreement negotiations to make an impact on the human rights situation in countries with which it foresees economic bounds, called MEPs from the Subcommittee on Human Rights during a debate on Thursday morning 3 March. They exchanged views with Emily O'Reilly, EU Ombudsman, regarding her decision on the failure of the European Commission to conduct a prior human rights impact assessment of the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement.

Ms Elena Valenciano, Chair of the of the Subcommittee on Human Rights, expressed her grave concerns at the arrest of several activists from the youth movement, Lutte pour le Changement (LUCHA), on 16 February 2016, just before the general strike took place. The strike was called by opposition political parties and civil society organisations, to protest against delays in the preparation for the 2016 presidential elections in the Democratic republic of Congo (DRC).

Upon request by the FEMM Committee, the study presents an overview of the most important issues faced by refugees and asylum seeking women in their host country regarding access to appropriate housing, including privacy and shelter in case of domestic violence, training and language courses, the labour market, and the health systems, including psychological support and trauma healing. A summary of international standards and of applicable European laws, as well as details on available funding from the European level are provided. International promising projects illustrate the way forward.

The Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality will hold an inter-parliamentary committee meeting dealing with the issue of women refugees and asylum seekers in the EU. The discussions will focus namely on combating violence against women refugees and asylum seekers, their situation in terms of healthcare, and measures for promoting their integration. This thematic digest contains selected publications provided by the policy departments to support committees in their work on these topics.

The INTA Committee in co-operation with the Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI) co-organised a hearing to take stock of the functioning of the new "Generalised Scheme of Preferences" (GSP) since the entry into force of the Regulation in 2014.

The European Union opens its market giving trade preferences to developing countries in exchange for commitments to respect international conventions on human rights, environment and good governance.

EU seamen detained in India, Ethiopia and North Korea nuclear test

Parliament calls on India to release the 14 Estonian and 6 British seamen detained in the south of the country, strongly condemns the nuclear test conducted on 6 January by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and deplores the recent use of excessive force by security forces in Ethiopia, in three resolutions voted on Thursday.

A mission of the European Parliament's Subcommittee on HumanRights (DROI) visited Mexico and Guatemala on 9-12 February 2016. In Mexicomeetings on the first day were jointly with the EU-Mexico Joint ParliamentaryCommittee. The DROI mission led by DROI Vice-Chair Cristian Preda (EPP, RO)and was composed of DROI Vice-Chair Beatriz Becerra Basterrechea (ALDE,ES) and Hans-Olaf Henkel (ECR, DE).

This study provides an overview of the practice of forced marriage in the EU from a gender equality and women’s rights perspective. It analyses the definitions of forced marriage and puts forward a definition from a gender perspective. It also provides an overview of the relevant international/EU legislation, policies and deliberations, as well as national policies, civil law and criminal law (in the 12 Member State that criminalise forced marriage). For those Member States that criminalise forced marriage, the study provides an assessment of the effectiveness and possible consequences of the implementation of the criminal legislation, including an analysis of data and case-law. The study includes a specific chapter focusing on forced marriage within Roma communities and five case-studies specifically focusing on Denmark, Germany, Spain, Slovakia and the UK. The study also puts forward recommendations for improving the response to forced marriage at EU and Member State level.
